Vitens selects Aquasuite® for monitoring and real time smart control

Vitens, the largest drinking water company in the Netherlands, has chosen to implement Royal HaskoningDHV’s Aquasuite® smart water solution to provide valuable a reliable and secure supply of top quality drinking water to 5.5 million people. Doing so is in line with the sustainability and innovation aspects of Vitens’ strategic goals.

The Aquasuite® OPIR software optimises the production, transport and distribution of drinking water by applying Big Data analysis and machine learning algorithms. Aquasuite® fully integrates and automates the total water system, leading to a more stable and continuous purification process and fewer turbidity peaks. As a result the quality of drinking water is improved whilst power consumption is reduced by up to seven percent. Aquasuite® also improves the pressure management significantly, actively reducing non-revenue water (NRW).

Vitens applied Aquasuite® for the first time in January 2002 and currently the platform is running successfully in a number of regions. Doeke Schippers, Director Water Production at Vitens: “A stable control of our entire production and distribution capacity is crucial for Vitens. OPIR is an important tool for this, and we expect to roll it out across our entire service area within the next 30 months.”

Vitens supplies 330 million cubic metres of drinking water per year. Drinking water is produced and delivered directly and indirectly to customers through a system of 96 production plants, 90 clear water tanks and 65 distribution pumping stations, making integral control a significant challenge. Doeke says: “Aquasuite® is an example of how we implement data-driven technologies in our water networks. Vitens is a frontrunner in Smart Water development. Another example is that Vitens is one of the first in the world to install a major smart drinking water network, with 200 sensors that will measure the demand and quality of the drinking water in real time.”

Esther Bosman, Director Water NL of Royal HaskoningDHV explained the benefits of Aquasuite®: “The real strength is in its ability to fully integrate the water system from a holistic point of view, changing the way the system is operated. We are pleased to continue our proven relationship with Vitens and are happy to see another step taken in line with our vision for Smart Water.”
